Concentration
Thus have i heard:-The exalted One was staying at Sawathi.
Thus spake the Exalted One:"Concentration, brethren, practice concentration. A brother, who is concentrated, brethren, knows a thing as it really is.And what does he know as it really is? The arising of body and the passing away thereof:the arising of feeling and the passing away of feeling,of perception, and the activities; the arising of consciousness and the passing away thereof.
And what, brethren,is the arising of body,of feeling,of perception, of the activities,of consciousness?
Herein, brethren, one is enamoured, one welcomes;having clung one persists.
To what?
He is enamoured of body . . .clings to body . . .so clinging there comes lure upon him.that lure which is in body is grasping. Conditioned by that grasping is becoming. conditioned by becoming is birth, conditioned by birth old age and decay, sorrow and grief, woe, lamentation and despair together come into being? Thus is the arising of this whole mass of ill.
He is enamoured of feeling . . . of perception . . . of the activities . . . of consciousness;he welcomes it,having clung he persists- and lure comes upon him and grasping . . . even to sorrow . . . . . to despair. Thus is the arising of this whole mass of ill. Such, brethren, is the arising of body, of feeling, perception, the activities, of consciousness.
And what ,brethren is the passing away of body ,of feeling ,of perption,of the activities,of consciouness?
In this case ,brethren,he is not enamoured,he does not welcome, not having clung does not persist. With respect to what? To body, not welcoming it, not having clung does not persisting. with respect to body, there are arises not the lure which is in body,The passing away of the lure is the passing away of grasping. The passing away of grasping is the passing away of becoming. . . .and so forth. Thus is the passing away of this whole mass of ill.
So also as regards feeling, perception , the actives and consciousness. This , brethren, the actives and consciousness." This, brethren,is the passing away of body, of feeling, of perception, the activities and of consciousness."
On a reading of the above sermon one fact should be clear to the reader, that is, that the five aggregates come into being because of our own desir for them. Greef, lamentation, suffering, sorrow and despair associated with the with the aggregates are caused by our own action, not the action of any external agency such as God, the postulated creator of the univers. We live our lives deeply involved in the workings of the aggregates because of our clinging to them, and our desire to be happy by manipulating them. it is our unbridled desire for them that makes the five aggregates come into being. If we are not enamoured of them, do not cling to them, and do not abide in them, the aggregates do not come into being at all.The world of aggregates is a world of sorrow and and suffering with little happiness. If we do not pursue it, if we do not cling to it, then, there cannot be becoming and birth.
